There is nothing I enjoy more than serendipity. It is a word (and concept) that I learned at a very young age through a beloved childhood book about a pink sea monster named Serendipity who learns that her true calling is to be guardian of the seas. Serendipity was also one of my father’s favourite words.
Moscow is full of unexpected surprises (are there any other kind?) and happy discoveries around every corner. This aspect of the city is one that I treasure the most. On the other side of the garden beside Храм Христа Спасителя (Christ the Saviour Cathedral), across the street from Галерея искусства стран Европы и Америки XIX–XX вв (19th and 20th C European and American Art wing of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts) is a tent housing a series of arresting tableaux detailing the history of Russia through incredibly detailed and complex sand castles! This ephemeral display took 12 artists from around the globe over a week to carve and coax the historical narratives from the piles of sand. The detail in each sculpture is simply astounding. Have a look!
Serendipity, indeed.
Great things often come in small packages. Just ask Peter Dinklage!
