The Early Bird Gets The ... Tourist?!

For three days now I’ve been trying to get my lazy bones out of bed, into a shower and out the door for about 6AM.  I haven’t been successful.  The weather has been brilliant lately and I really, really wanted to take advantage of the early sunrises to scoot over to Александровский сад and Красная площадь via trolleybus in order to snap a few photos without any pesky tourists getting in the way.

You see, I had it in my head that Red Square would be a ghost town at 7AM and I could happily snap away, unhindered.  With this thought in mind to motivate me, I hauled my cookies out of bed, bathed and made myself somewhat presentable.  I figured that makeup wouldn’t be necessary as practically nobody would be around, right?  With wet hair trussed up in a handy hair clip, both eyes in the same socket and what I think was a pair of matching socks on my feet, I headed out the door.  Mr. U was still fast asleep, hidden safely under the covers, well sheltered from the heat and light of the morning sun’s rays.

The walk to the trolleybus stop takes no more than six minutes at worst and rarely do I cross paths with another soul as I wind my way through the back streets behind the imposing apartment blocks on my way to the main проспeкт.  This morning was no different.  I was lulled into a sense of security knowing that if the main thoroughfare that is “Kutz” is calm and quiet, there would certainly be no traffic, pedestrian or otherwise, around Red Square.  I found myself alone at the bus stop waiting less than five minutes for the rickety trolley to chug along.  With only three other people on the trolleybus at this unseemly hour, my confidence in my soon-to-be solitary and intimate experience was bolstered.

 Early Morning Light

Boy, was I wrong!

It turns out that there is a whole wave of early morning commuters along with, get this, TOURISTS!

I couldn’t believe my eyes.
Honestly.

So much for a quiet morning.

Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and managed to snap a few good photos.  I am going to have to wait until the height of summer next year and be up and out of the house at 5AM in order to evade the teeming masses.

This little guy (Саша) saw me taking photos and was posing for me.  he absolutely wanted me to take his photo.  His mom didn't mind, I promise.  He was really sweet.  After I showed him the photo, he posed again!

The exact center of Moscow.  All geographic points leading to/from the city are measured from here.
Regardless of my shattered dreams, I did make it home in time to brew a coffee for Mr. U and send him off with a goodbye kiss and pat on the head as he growled his way out the door on his way to work.
