Day two, I find myself awake at 6:30AM (which my body is convinced is actually 8:30AM) and raring to go. The only problem with this is that Mr. U is passed out beside me and the rest of Berlin is still asleep. After 20 minutes of unsuccessfully trying to convince my body to go back to sleep, I decide to hop in the shower and start my day.
Yesterday’s brief visit to the site of Checkpoint Charlie left me wanting to return and since the sun was already high in the sky and there were no other people around, it was perfect timing. I had a completely private experience and was able to read the information posted all around and explore the area unhindered. It was eerily familiar to see the Cyrillic writing on the walls. It is amazing how much information and detail you notice each time you return to a site. Yesterday I had not noticed the bricks along the sidewalk indicating the former path of the Berlin wall. Nor did I notice how the tiles were artfully arranged along the edge of the sidewalk to spell out “Unity in Liberty” in German, French, English and Russian.

In the space of 12 hours in Berlin I have already discovered a few things about this city. Mainly that there are very interesting things around every corner so deviating from the beaten path is definitely the way to go. Secondly, the pace and energy of this city is quiet and calm and generally, people are relaxed and easygoing. I’m going to like it here, very much. Already I can feel myself unwinding and I’m very much looking forward to what the next adventure that is just around the corner might be.
