Today started off slowly with some lazing and relaxing at the hotel. Before I turned around it was already 2PM. Off to Hadrian’s Gate and the Temple of Zeus, I proclaimed! One thing that I have a hard time getting used to is the hours of operation of national monuments and attractions. You see, most venues close at 2:30 or 3:00 and the last entry time for the Temple of Zeus was 2:45 -exactly the time it happened to be as we reached the entrance gates. Apparently the staff make no concessions for a smile and a pleading look. I’ll be returning tomorrow for a closer look at the ruins of this majestic temple. I must have pouted for a good 20 minutes after being unceremoniously turned away. Mr. U seemed to find this amusing somehow. *sigh* Looking through the bars of the wrought-iron fence I was able to view the temple from afar and now I’m looking forward to a much earlier start to my day tomorrow.
We continued our leisurely walk around downtown Αθηνα and came upon two Εύζωνες (Evzones -Presidential Guard) in front of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They were changing position when we arrived. They are as well-trained as Grenadier Guards -staying totally still at all times and will not leave their post for any reason.
I am very much enjoying walking through the narrow streets of Αθηνα and constantly turning the corner to come face to face with ruins, churches, charming buildings and unexpected glimpses of everyday life in this busy city. Here are just a few snaps of today’s discoveries.
